Pre-market and after-market sessions at the Madrid Stock Exchange
The trading day includes additional periods beyond the regular hours:
Opening auction (pre-market): Operates from 8:30 am to 9:00 am. During this period, unexecuted orders from the previous session and new auction orders are processed to determine the opening price.
After-market auction (after-market): Runs from 5:30 pm to 5:35 pm. It establishes an equilibrium price that allows execution of orders that did not find a counterparty during the regular session.
Historical context of the Spanish stock exchange
The institution has deep roots in the Spanish economy. It was founded on September 10, 1831, through the Law of Creation of the Madrid Stock Exchange, drafted by jurist Pedro Sainz de Andino. Activity began on October 20 of the same year, with banks, steel companies, and railway firms being the first traded securities.
The other Spanish stock exchanges were created later: Bilbao in 1890, Barcelona in 1915, and Valencia in 1980. The integration of the four into the SIBE occurred in 1995, and since 2001, management has been under Bolsas y Mercados Españoles (BME).
The IBEX 35 index, which groups the 35 companies with the highest market capitalization in Spain, was launched on January 14, 1992.
