The board, which is an independent body of experts that reviews Meta’s content moderation decisions, made the call after overturning Meta’s earlier judgment in a case tied to the 12-day Israel-Iran conflict in June 2025. The board argued that Meta’s “approach to surfacing AI-generated content must evolve.”

Board Flags Meta’s Decision in Viral AI Post

The group studied an AI-generated video posted by a Philippines-based user that attracted over 700,000 views. According to the board, the video claimed to be a news source, with the content suggesting extensive damage to the coastal city of Haifa in northwestern Israel.

The group said Meta only took action by taking down the content and disabling related accounts after its study. Meta previously judged that the content did not violate its misinformation community standard judgment and did not require a “high-risk” AI label.

Board Calls for Meta’s AI Content Policy Change

As a result, the experts called on Meta to introduce changes to its current policies to ensure that deceptive AI-generated content can be flagged in a timely and adequate manner.

“[Meta] needs to meet its public commitments and employ its own tools and others available across the industry to effectively address deceptive generative AI content that spreads among platforms,” the board noted.

The call comes as AI-generated deepfakes on social media platforms, especially during periods of armed conflicts, remain a deep source of concern for industry stakeholders. This has also emerged as a key problem in the ongoing U.S.-Israel-Iran war.

Meanwhile, last month, the British government tapped Microsoft MSFT -0.93% ▼ and other tech firms to help build “the world’s first” deepfake detection system.

Is Meta Stock a Buy or Sell Right Now?

In addition, the average META price target of $858.86 implies about 31% upside from current trading levels.
