Hong Kong gasoline prices surpass HKD 30 per liter; shipping companies raise fuel surcharges
[Caixin] The ongoing tension in the Middle East has driven up international oil prices, leading to significant increases in Hong Kong’s retail fuel prices and airline fuel surcharges. Data from the Hong Kong Consumer Council shows that gasoline prices in Hong Kong have all exceeded HKD 30 per liter, with retail prices at Caltex and Esso reaching HKD 32.89 per liter for premium unleaded gasoline. Hong Kong Airlines also announced a fuel surcharge increase effective March 12, with a maximum one-way increase of HKD 150.
The Hong Kong government imposes a fuel tax of HKD 6.06 per liter on unleaded gasoline. According to the Consumer Council’s “Fuel Price Information” webpage, on February 28—the day of the Iran attack—the price of premium unleaded gasoline at five chain gas stations, after deducting store discounts and fuel taxes, ranged from HKD 13.13 to HKD 23.83 per liter. However, by March 10, the post-discount fuel prices at all stations had risen across the board. For example, at Caltex, which saw the largest increase, the price of premium unleaded gasoline rose from HKD 15.43 to HKD 25.43 per liter, an increase of 64.8%. During the same period, Brent crude oil prices also increased from HKD 3.47 to HKD 5.05 per liter, a rise of approximately 45.5%.
