Tesla Model Y becomes Europe's best-selling pure electric vehicle in 2025, but the brand's total sales are overtaken by Volkswagen
IT Home, February 13 — According to automotive media TeslaRati today, despite multiple adverse factors such as production transitions, increased competition, and anti-Elon Musk sentiments, the Model Y remains the best-selling pure electric vehicle in Europe in 2025, significantly ahead of its competitors.
JATO Dynamics data shows that Tesla Model Y registered a total of 149,805 units in Europe last year, maintaining the top spot in all pure electric vehicle sales. However, compared to the previous year, the registration volume decreased by 28%. It is believed that this decline may be related to Tesla’s release of a new version of the Model Y in the first quarter of 2025, during which the transition period between old and new models affected production and delivery schedules in multiple markets.
At the same time, some of Elon Musk’s statements last year and geopolitical factors have led to anti-Musk sentiments in several European countries, negatively impacting the brand’s reputation.
IT Home’s JATO Dynamics registration volume rankings are as follows:
1st place: Tesla Model Y, 149,805 units
2nd place: Škoda Enyaq, 93,870 units
3rd place: Tesla Model 3, 85,393 units
4th place: Renault 5 E-Tech, 85,101 units
While the Model Y leads significantly in individual model sales, from a brand perspective, Volkswagen sold 274,278 pure electric vehicles last year, surpassing Tesla with a 56% year-over-year increase. The best-selling model was the ID.7. In comparison, Tesla sold a total of 236,357 pure electric vehicles in Europe, a decrease of 27% year-over-year.
Analysts commented: “Tesla’s overall product lineup is relatively limited and the models are gradually aging, facing fierce competition from local traditional automakers and emerging Chinese car companies in Europe.”
