In the race to accelerate autonomous driving technology, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi recently shared his long-term vision for the field. The executive believes that most transportation services on Uber’s platform could be operated by autonomous vehicles within 20 years, provided that a comprehensive regulatory framework, technological breakthroughs, and infrastructure investments are in place.

Autonomous Driving Market Outlook and Real Challenges

Autonomous taxis (роботакси) are seen as a key direction for future transportation. In a recent podcast, Khosrowshahi stated, “Imagine that most of our trips will be completed by some form of robot.” However, he also emphasized that this transition will not happen in the short term and will require a development cycle of 15 to 20 years.

According to a 2025 industry analysis report by Goldman Sachs, the U.S. роботакси market is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years. But it’s important to note that even by 2030, the autonomous taxi market will still constitute a relatively small share of the overall ride-hailing market. This indicates that, despite promising prospects, a full market transition will take more time.

Three Major Barriers: Regulation, Technology, and Infrastructure

When explaining the conditions for scaling роботакси, Dara Khosrowshahi listed three key factors: first, support from regulators and the development of a proper policy framework; second, the maturity of autonomous vehicle technology; third, continuous optimization of sensor systems and algorithm models. He emphasized, “We are not working in a virtual world but in the real world.” This means that theoretical feasibility must translate into practical business operations.

The importance of regulation is self-evident. Khosrowshahi mentioned, “A complete regulatory system needs to be established, including vehicle manufacturing, sensor technology development, and algorithms that meet accuracy standards.” Uber has established a dedicated Autonomous Solutions division to coordinate the global роботакси projects.

Tech Giants and the Autonomous Driving Competition

Different companies have adopted varied strategies in autonomous driving technology. Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously announced plans to build the largest autonomous fleet in the industry and continue investing in AI and machine learning to improve autonomous systems. Tesla primarily relies on camera-based technology for autonomous driving.

In contrast, Alphabet’s Waymo employs a different approach. Its autonomous vehicles depend on advanced sensors like lidar and claim to have surpassed human driving standards. While Tesla aims for maximum scale, Waymo emphasizes safety and maturity of technology. The rivalry between these two represents the two main technological paths in the autonomous driving industry.

Additionally, Amazon’s Zoox and other autonomous vehicle companies are expanding their commercial operations in select U.S. cities, further intensifying market competition.

Remote Support: Waymo’s Response and Safety Considerations

Regarding safety issues surrounding autonomous taxis, Waymo recently clarified an important point to the U.S. Congress. The company stated that its роботакси do not operate with remote driving in the U.S., but are supported by remote teams providing assistance and advice, with the final control always maintained by the onboard system.

According to Waymo, the company operates remote support centers in multiple U.S. states and the Philippines, with about 70 operators involved. These remote teams monitor and advise but do not directly control the vehicles. Waymo also clarified that during commercial operations, employees do not have remote control over the vehicles. This clarification reflects industry concerns about safety and regulatory compliance.

From Dara Khosrowshahi’s latest remarks and the actions of various industry players, it’s clear that autonomous taxis are a promising development path, but commercialization remains a long journey. Improving regulation, advancing technology, and gaining societal acceptance are all essential conditions for the widespread deployment of роботакси.
