The Ministry of Science, Technology, Information, and Communications has decided to expand the supply of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to strengthen artificial intelligence research and development capabilities. This initiative, launched on March 16, aims to enhance AI competitiveness by providing high-performance computing resources to industry and academia.

The GPU leasing program is mainly divided into two parts. The first focuses on high-performance computing support, primarily providing GPUs to industry. Through open recruitment, cloud service providers supplying more than 1,060 GPUs will be selected by April 16. This aims to enable small and medium-sized enterprises and startups to effectively utilize small-scale AI computing resources.

The second part is the AI research computing support project, targeting AI researchers in academia and research institutions. Support providers offering more than 960 GPUs will be selected through open recruitment by April 6. This project is dedicated to building research environments capable of supporting large-scale AI development, such as rapidly evolving large language models (LLMs).

Additionally, the government will conduct a second round of public recruitment for short-term GPU resource allocation to industry, funded by an additional budget approved in 2025. This recruitment will be completed by March 30, with resources starting to be supplied from early April. The government plans to address short-term demand and contribute to expanding AI infrastructure through this effort.

The expansion of GPU support stems from the understanding that strengthening AI computing infrastructure is directly related to enhancing national competitiveness. The Ministry of Science, Technology, Information, and Communications intends to solidify the foundation for sustainable AI development domestically by providing ample GPU resources to the private sector. This trend is expected to positively impact technological innovation and global competitiveness in the AI field.
