“Super El Niño to Cause Hottest Year” Trending—Is It True? Experts Respond→

According to CCTV News, recent topics such as “This and next year could be the hottest in history” and “Super El Niño may occur” have trended online, attracting widespread public attention. Experts from the China Meteorological Administration were interviewed for analysis.

Based on the latest monitoring data and forecasts from multiple climate models domestically and internationally, the La Niña phase is ending, and a neutral state is expected to follow. The tropical Pacific Ocean temperatures are expected to continue rising, and an El Niño may develop in late spring.

Climate expert Liu Yunyun explained that historically, about one-third of La Niña events are followed by El Niño within the same year. Different climate models predict the onset of El Niño at varying times, earliest possibly in April and latest by late summer or autumn, with significant discrepancies among models. Overall, the likelihood of an El Niño forming in the second half of this year is high, but precise timing and strength remain uncertain. Currently, multiple climate models still show considerable divergence, and a consensus has not been reached. It is premature to conclude that a “super El Niño” will occur this year.

Climate expert Chen Lijuan pointed out that El Niño events are usually associated with global temperature increases. However, the extent of warming and extreme weather depends on the strength and type of El Niño and regional climate responses. It is too early to determine that an ultra-strong El Niño will cause the hottest year.
