Australia’s Energy Minister Chris Bowen said on Sunday that the country still has sufficient fuel supplies and currently has no emergency plans to implement fuel rationing in response to the Iran conflict affecting the supply chain.

About 90% of Australia’s fuel depends on imports, and with the escalation of the conflict between the U.S. and Israel disrupting supplies, some regions in the country are experiencing fuel shortages.

In a televised statement, Bowen cited data up to Saturday, stating that Australia has a 38-day supply of gasoline and a 30-day supply of diesel and jet fuel. He said that despite the cancellation of six fuel shipments from Asia, overall supply remains stable.

“Although we are facing uncertainties, two refineries are operating at full capacity. Of course, it would be better if there were more refineries, but we currently have two, and ships are still arriving,” he said.

When asked whether the center-left government is considering using emergency powers to implement fuel rationing, Bowen responded, “It’s still far from that step.”

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese once again urged the public not to panic buy fuel amid shortages in some rural areas.
