My Mountains and Seas: It wasn't until Gao Xiang's identity was exposed that Fang Wanzhi discovered the truth behind Boss Sun's admission of defeat
In the TV drama “My Mountains and Seas,” the storyline of Fang Wanzhi starting her own toy factory alone abroad is full of twists and turns. She initially wanted to establish herself in the industry through hard work and honest management, but from the very beginning of the factory’s establishment, she faced continuous suppression from her competitor, Boss Sun, nearly going bankrupt multiple times. However, the originally arrogant and aggressive Boss Sun suddenly stopped bothering her and even voluntarily withdrew from the competition. At that time, Fang Wanzhi was puzzled and thought it was her persistence and product quality that impressed the clients. It wasn’t until Gao Xiang’s true identity was fully revealed that she finally understood that behind Boss Sun’s surrender lay a truth she was completely unaware of.
Just as Fang Wanzhi’s toy factory was beginning to succeed, it became Boss Sun’s target. Having been in the toy business locally for many years and accustomed to dominating the market, Boss Sun saw that Fang Wanzhi’s factory used quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship, gradually stealing away many clients. He then began to sabotage her at every turn. He would maliciously lower prices to snatch orders, making it unprofitable for Fang Wanzhi; secretly collude with raw material suppliers to inflate procurement costs; or create obstacles in production qualifications and sales channels, forcing her to cut back on production lines and delay wages. During that period, Fang Wanzhi faced immense pressure daily, running around seeking help, countless times wanting to give up, but unwilling to see her years of hard work go to waste. She could only grit her teeth and persevere.
During Fang Wanzhi’s most difficult days, Gao Xiang was always by her side. In her initial understanding, Gao Xiang was just an ordinary and enthusiastic person. He was the vice principal of a night school and occasionally went out as a guest reporter for interviews. He was gentle, steady, and organized in his work. Whenever Fang Wanzhi encountered problems—be it cash flow issues, being set up in contracts, or being deliberately harassed by local forces—Gao Xiang always appeared in time to help her resolve crises easily. Fang Wanzhi had always regarded Gao Xiang as a trustworthy friend, believing he was just well-connected and experienced, never suspecting that he had an extraordinary hidden identity, nor linking Boss Sun’s sudden retreat to Gao Xiang.
As the plot developed, Gao Xiang’s true identity was finally revealed, providing a reasonable explanation for all the seemingly coincidental events. It turned out Gao Xiang was not just an ordinary staff member but a powerful entrepreneur with substantial capital, extensive connections, and mature business resources. His reason for hiding his identity was to shed his family background and experience the entrepreneurial journey of an ordinary person firsthand. He was also genuinely moved by Fang Wanzhi’s resilience and diligent effort, sincerely wanting to help her.
The reason Boss Sun suddenly surrendered was not because he couldn’t compete with Fang Wanzhi, but because Gao Xiang was quietly exerting pressure from behind the scenes, fully suppressing him. Gao Xiang first used his resources to help optimize Fang Wanzhi’s production process, improve efficiency, stabilize product quality, and connect her with more formal and stable clients, gradually putting her toy factory on the right track and freeing it from Boss Sun’s low-price tactics. Meanwhile, Gao Xiang also limited Boss Sun’s development through business channels—restricting shipping routes, cooperation resources, and market share—causing Boss Sun to encounter obstacles everywhere, severely impacting his business.
Boss Sun always thought he was just competing with Fang Wanzhi’s small factory, unaware that he was actually up against Gao Xiang’s formidable business strength. The two were on completely different levels of competition. Boss Sun’s petty tricks were no match for Gao Xiang. Continuing to fight would only lead to greater losses for Boss Sun, with no chance of victory. Reluctantly, he had no choice but to surrender and stop targeting Fang Wanzhi.
Only when Gao Xiang’s identity was exposed did Fang Wanzhi realize the truth. Her ability to overcome difficulties repeatedly and make the arrogant Boss Sun bow was never just luck or solely her own effort. Gao Xiang had been silently protecting her from behind the scenes, using his abilities to clear obstacles and block all attacks.
This storyline is not only a major plot twist in the series but also makes Fang Wanzhi’s entrepreneurial journey more realistic. Her resilience and effort are commendable, but without Gao Xiang’s covert assistance, it would have been difficult for her to persist under Boss Sun’s ongoing suppression. The truth about Boss Sun’s surrender ultimately reflects the inevitable result of an imbalance of strength, and it also makes Fang Wanzhi truly realize how much she has been silently guarded all along.
