An internal memo shows that JPMorgan has hired Gao Sheng’s Zhang Yi as Co-Head of China Investment Banking, the latest in a series of new hires aimed at strengthening its Asian banking operations.

The memo states that Zhang Yi will join JPMorgan this summer and will work alongside Michelle Wang, who remains Co-Head of China Investment Banking.

A JPMorgan spokesperson confirmed the contents of the internal memo and added that the bank has hired more than a dozen investment banking staff over the past year.

These moves come as IPO activity in Hong Kong surges and M&A activity in Japan and Australia remains active, boosting regional talent demand.

Zhang Yi has been with Goldman Sachs for nearly 20 years and has an outstanding track record in manufacturing and industrial-related transactions.

The memo states that Liu Bowei, JPMorgan’s current Co-Head of China Investment Banking, will serve as Vice Chairman of Investment Banking for the Asia-Pacific region, taking on a broader regional role.

Liu Bowei will lead the bank’s business with some major Hong Kong clients, deepen relationships with Hong Kong regulators, and continue overseeing the bank’s healthcare business in the Asia-Pacific region.
