Meta Acquires Once-Hot AI Agent Social Network Moltbook, Founder Joins Superintelligence Lab
Tech Home, March 10 — According to Axios, Meta has acquired Moltbook, a once-popular AI intelligent social network.
This acquisition will bring Moltbook founders Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr into Meta’s Superintelligence Lab (MSL), led by former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang.
Meta did not disclose the purchase price of Moltbook.
Meta stated that the deal is expected to close in mid-March, with the two founders officially joining MSL on March 16.
According to Tech Home, Moltbook’s social network originally operated alongside another independent project, OpenClaw. OpenClaw was formerly known as Clawdbot and was briefly renamed Moltbot.
Last month, OpenAI hired Peter Steinberger, the developer of OpenClaw. The product is now open-source under OpenAI’s support.
Since 2023, Schlicht has focused on autonomous AI intelligent agent research, launching Moltbook in late January as an experimental “third space” for AI intelligences.
Moltbook was largely developed with the assistance of Schlicht’s personal AI assistant, Clawd Clawderberg.
Parr has previously served as an editor and columnist for Mashable and CNET.
A Meta spokesperson told Axios, “The Moltbook team joining MSL will open up new pathways for AI intelligent agents serving individuals and businesses.”
Vishal Shah of Meta wrote in a blog that existing Moltbook users can continue using the platform, but Meta hinted that this arrangement is only a temporary transition.
Shah stated, “The Moltbook team has provided authentication methods for intelligent agents and allows them to interact on behalf of humans. This establishes a verifiable registration system for agents that is tied to human owners.” He added, “The team has unlocked new ways for agents to interact, share content, and collaborate on complex tasks.”
