Iowa has accused General Motors of violating consumer fraud laws by secretly collecting and selling driving data from its vehicles’ OnStar program to insurance companies without customer consent. The state claims GM profited significantly from this data, which was used to potentially raise insurance rates or deny coverage. GM responded by stating its commitment to privacy and noting that it had discontinued its Smart Driver program and ended third-party telematics relationships due to customer feedback, also having settled with the FTC regarding privacy concerns.
