Xinhua News Agency, Tehran, March 18 — Iranian Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian said on the 18th that the assassination of Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, will not deal a “fatal blow” to Iran’s leadership and will not shake Iran’s political structure.

In an interview with Al Jazeera after Larijani’s death, Abdollahian stated that the U.S. and Israel have not yet realized that the Iranian government does not rely on any single individual. “I don’t understand why the U.S. and Israelis don’t see this: Iran’s political structure is strong and robust, with complete political, economic, and social systems. The presence or absence of a single person does not affect this structure.”

Abdollahian cited the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei as an example, saying that although Khamenei’s death would be a huge loss for the country, “the system continues to operate,” and “if one day the foreign minister were to pass away, someone else would eventually take over that position.”

He reiterated in the interview that ongoing conflicts in the Gulf region and beyond are not something Iran wishes to see, and the U.S. must be held responsible. “This war was not initiated by us but by the United States. Whether it concerns Iran, the region, or the entire world, all the consequences—whether casualties or economic losses—must be borne by the U.S.” (End)
