Historical data is on Germany’s side— but records are meant to be broken

When it comes to Germany’s historical head-to-heads against Côte d’Ivoire, the numbers really do favor Germany. The two teams have only met once, in a 2009 friendly, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

At the World Cup level, the Germany national team’s record against African teams is 8 matches: 5 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss. The only time they’ve lost to an African team was in January 1982, when they were beaten 1-2 by Algeria. Côte d’Ivoire’s record against European teams is 4 matches: 1 win, 1 draw, 2 losses. Judging from historical data, Germany really has the upper hand.

But, brothers, historical data sometimes can be misleading.

In that 2009 friendly, Côte d’Ivoire at one point overturned the score to lead 2-1. Although it finished as a draw, Côte d’Ivoire showed a completely fearless attitude toward Germany in that match. And Germany in that game was totally different from today—back then, they had Ballack, Schweinsteiger, and Klose. This current German team, while talented, still has a gap compared with that era in terms of tournament experience and toughness.

Côte d’Ivoire has kept improving over the years. In 2023, they won the Africa Cup of Nations. In 2026, in a warm-up match away from home, they beat France. They’re no longer the team from back then that relied on Drogba alone to carry things. Today’s Côte d’Ivoire is younger, more cohesive, and more tactically disciplined.

Germany’s historical record against African teams is indeed impressive, but records like these—are meant to be broken. If Côte d’Ivoire can become the first African team to beat Germany at the World Cup (besides Algeria in 1982), that would be the brightest moment in their national football history. Their fighting spirit is absolutely at full strength.
