President Donald Trump signed two executive orders on Monday to speed up U.S. progress in quantum technology and strengthen digital security.
One order aims to have a powerful quantum computer ready by 2028. The project will bring together government agencies, private companies, and universities to build a system that can solve scientific problems beyond the reach of today’s computers.
The initiative, called Quantum Computer for Application Development and Discovery Science, plans to place at least one system at a Department of Energy facility so researchers across the country can use it.
The Energy Department will define the technical goals within 90 days and study partnership options with private companies within 180 days. The Commerce Department will also work with quantum firms to support development.
Quantum computers could help accelerate discoveries in medicine, chemistry, materials science, and artificial intelligence.
The order also calls for faster development of quantum sensors and networks, with some technologies expected to reach real-world use by late 2028. In addition, the U.S. will update its national quantum strategy to better support research and commercial applications.
A second order focuses on cybersecurity. Federal agencies are directed to adopt encryption methods that can withstand future quantum attacks, with most of the transition targeted for completion by 2031.
Together, the orders highlight a broader effort to strengthen U.S. leadership in quantum technology while improving long-term digital security. Officials believe the goal of achieving a scientifically useful quantum computer by 2028 is possible through close cooperation between government, industry, and academia.
