On July 9 local time, FIFA confirmed that England defender Konsa has been suspended for two matches, and these two suspensions will be served during the World Cup. In the earlier match where England beat Mexico 3-2, Konsa went in with a flying tackle; the sole of his boot clipped the opponent’s ankle, earning a straight red and forcing him off the field.
Konsa’s red card originally drew no controversy, but against the backdrop of the “red card delayed” incident involving U.S. player Barogun, Konsa was not given a delayed ruling despite making a similar foul, sparking widespread backlash. Although FIFA previously stressed that Barogun’s delayed treatment was based on grounds and had not been influenced by external intervention, U.S. President Trump personally confirmed that he had asked about the matter, making it hard for outsiders to not doubt the fairness of the handling.
Jonas Eriksson, a former Swedish referee who has officiated at the World Cup, said: “Everyone wants the referee to make the right decision, but more importantly, the standard should always be consistent. You need to show that Player A and Player B receive the same punishment, and Team A and Team B receive the same punishment—this is what people expect.”
“But in the cases of Barogun and Konsa, the treatment they received is clearly inconsistent.”
“You can’t find any reasonable explanation for FIFA’s handling of these two situations—so was the referee not issuing a reasonable ruling, or were the rules applied incorrectly? It’s like House of Cards—an ugly game behind the match. Under these circumstances, in my view, Konsa’s red card and suspension are like a riddle.”
