OpenAI launches the most powerful memory system "Dreaming V3"! ChatGPT automatically updates user preferences, eliminating the need for manual setup

OpenAI today (4th) announced the official launch of a new and more powerful memory synthesis system called "Dreaming V3" for its AI chatbot ChatGPT. The system can automatically learn and organize user preferences and conversation context, while addressing past issues of memories becoming outdated or inaccurate. Currently, this feature is available to Plus and Pro users in the United States, with plans to expand to free users in the coming weeks.

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated into daily life, enabling AI to possess smarter, continuously updating "long-term memories" has become a key to enhancing practicality. On June 4, 2026, OpenAI officially announced the major upgrade of its memory synthesis system "Dreaming" for ChatGPT. The system aims to solve issues of outdated information, insufficient accuracy, and the challenges of cost and scalability when operating at hundreds of millions of users.

Dreaming V3 Debuts, Memories Are No Longer Rigid

Looking back at the evolution of ChatGPT's memory features, from April 2024's reliance on users manually inputting "Saved Memories," to the first introduction in 2025 of "Dreaming V1," which could automatically organize conversations in the background, OpenAI has continuously sought breakthroughs in personalization.

The newly launched "Dreaming V3" adopts a more powerful and highly efficient architecture, allowing it to operate as the main independent memory system. Users can also easily view, add, or edit ChatGPT's understanding of themselves via a dedicated "Memory Summary Page," and even set trigger conditions for specific topics. For example, in travel planning, the AI will automatically remember that the user loves wildlife photography, prefers quiet dinners, and stays at hotels with strong air conditioning, providing highly customized suggestions accordingly.

The Three Standards for Judging "Good Memories"

OpenAI emphasizes in its announcement that the system focuses on three core goals when evaluating the usefulness of memories: First, "continuing practical context," ensuring that details mentioned by users are properly utilized in future conversations; second, "adhering to preferences and constraints," making AI responses more aligned with user habits.

The most critical is the third: "keeping up with the times." The system will automatically update its state over time to avoid cognitive dissonance. For example, after a user finishes a trip to Singapore and returns home, the updated Dreaming system will no longer recommend Singaporean restaurants at 5 a.m., but will accurately switch back to local options near the user's residence.

Computing Costs Reduced by 5 Times, Gradually Opening to Free Users

In terms of scalability, OpenAI has successfully reduced the computational costs for free users by about fivefold, laying the foundation for widespread adoption of this feature. Currently, Dreaming V3 is prioritized for US-based Plus and Pro subscribers, with plans to gradually roll out to more countries and to Free and Go plan users in the coming weeks.

Through this architectural upgrade, the memory feature has shifted from a mere auxiliary tool to a core capability of ChatGPT, paving the way for more in-depth personalized AI assistant experiences.
