1. What is OES?

OES (Off-Exchange Settlement) is a trading model designed specifically for institutional clients. Under this model:

  • Client assets are always held in segregated custody accounts under a third-party compliant custodian
  • No deposit into exchange wallets is required
  • Clients can still trade Spot, Margin, and Perpetual Contracts (Perp) on Gate
  • The custodian and Gate complete settlement automatically on an agreed periodic cycle

Gate adopts a unified periodic settlement mechanism:
settlement every 4 hours (UTC 0 / 4 / 8 / 12 / 16 / 20).
This model draws on the traditional finance (TradFi) structural design of "separation of custody and trade execution," enabling efficient trading while safeguarding asset security.

2. Core Structure of OES

2.1 Custody → Execution → Settlement Separation Architecture
OES establishes a clear value pathway:
Off-exchange asset custody → Trade execution on Gate → Periodic unified settlement

2.2 Operational Flow

Assets remain under third-party custodians such as BitGo / Copper / Fireblocks / Komainu
⬇️
Gate is authorized to execute trades via secure routing, signing policies, whitelist controls, and other mechanisms
⬇️
Net settlement is completed on a fixed periodic cycle

Throughout the entire process, assets are never moved to exchange wallets.

3. Risk Control & Security Mechanisms

OES is built on the premise of "security and auditability." Core controls include:

  • Multi-signature / Threshold Signature (MPC)
  • Dual-approval mechanism
  • Whitelisted address control
  • Address binding mechanism
  • Full-process audit logs
  • End-to-end authorization and transmission controls

4. Value of OES for Institutional Clients

OES primarily addresses the core pain points institutional clients face under traditional exchange models:

4.1 Reduced Counterparty Risk with the Exchange
Assets do not need to be deposited into exchange wallets, eliminating credit risk exposure from "asset concentration at the exchange."

4.2 Improved Capital Efficiency
Assets remain within the custody framework and can be used for yield management, internal risk management, and other compliant purposes — while simultaneously serving as trading margin and settlement collateral.

4.3 Better Alignment with Compliance & Audit Requirements
Many institutional internal policies require that assets must be held by a compliant custodian and must not be deposited directly at an exchange. The OES model is fully aligned with this structure.

4.4 Closer to Traditional Finance Architecture
In traditional finance, Custody, Execution, and Clearing/Settlement are inherently separated. OES brings this proven structure into the digital asset market.

5. Gate's Role in the OES Framework

Under the OES model, Gate's role is:
Trading Platform — Trade Execution & Liquidity Provider
This specifically includes:

  • Providing depth and liquidity across Spot, Margin, and Perp products
  • Coordinating with custodians to complete settlement
  • Supporting a complete trading workflow without directly holding client assets

Gate's focus areas: execution efficiency, liquidity quality, risk control coordination, and settlement stability.

6. Primary Target Clients for OES

OES is primarily suited for:

  • Institutional clients (funds, asset managers, market makers, family offices)
  • Clients highly sensitive to asset security and counterparty risk
  • Clients with strict compliance and audit requirements
  • Clients already operating within custodians such as BitGo, Copper, Komainu, or Fireblocks
  • Professional institutions with high trading volumes and significant asset scale
