Gate News reports that on March 19, payment company Block has rehired some employees after laying off 4,000 staff at the end of February. Several employees posted on LinkedIn saying they received return-to-work invitations. One design engineer stated that their layoff was due to a “clerical error” and has accepted the rehire offer; a technical lead said he spent two days convincing management that more staff were needed to continue critical infrastructure work for clients, allowing some laid-off colleagues to return; a creative strategy head said they received a rehire invitation about a week after being laid off, but the reason was not specified. Block CEO Jack Dorsey acknowledged during the layoffs that the decision might have been a mistake and retained flexibility to correct it, while also noting that the development of AI tools has forced the company to reorganize.
