Progress Update on the Seed Vault NFT Project
The “Seed Vault Non-Fungible Token (NFT) Collection” Season 3 project, promoted by the virtual asset exchange operator, has been completed, with the establishment of the third conservation site for endangered rare and native plants in a Seoul park.
The conservation site was built on a plot of approximately 667㎡, where 28 species of rare and native plants, including Baechohyang and Mullenamul, produced as NFTs, have been planted. Previous phases established conservation sites at the University Botanical Garden (29 rare and native plant species) and the Botanical Museum (48 species of Equisetum and 39 rare and native plant species).
The “Seed Vault NFT Collection” is an environmental project in collaboration with the Korea Botanical Gardens Association and the Environmental Foundation. The project creates NFTs based on images of seeds stored in the Baekdu-daegan Global Seed Vault and issues them through trading platforms, aiming to combine digital assets with biodiversity conservation.
The third season ran from May 14 to July 30 and was linked with the “Digital Healing Garden.” Visitors received NFTs of rare and native plants matching their characteristics, along with actual seeds, thus connecting NFTs with tree-planting activities.
Over 50,000 people participated this season. Visitor survey results showed:
86% said “the project increased their awareness of biodiversity”
87% believe biodiversity conservation is “an obligation that must be fulfilled”
88% said “they would participate again in NFT-based environmental activities”
A project official stated, “The Seed Vault NFT Collection demonstrates how technology can expand into an environmental protection tool. We will continue to explore the social value of technology and lay the foundation for a sustainable future.”
