Mercado Bitcoin, the largest digital asset platform in Latin America, announces the listing of three tokens from the Rootstock ecosystem: RIF, rBTC, and USDRIF. This initiative expands the portfolio of assets linked to Bitcoin infrastructure and offers users new investment opportunities and use cases in decentralized applications.

Rootstock is Bitcoin’s DeFi layer and combines the programmability of Ethereum with the store of value and decentralization of Bitcoin. The network is secured by more than 80% of Bitcoin’s hash power and is fully compatible with the EVM. This means that any application built on another EVM network can be deployed on Bitcoin using Rootstock, without any additional tools.

At the center of this ecosystem is RIF, Bitcoin’s scalability token, which serves as the gateway for exposure to Bitcoin-based DeFi.

Complementing this structure, USDRIF is a stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the US dollar — that is, each token is worth $1. It is a fully decentralized asset, backed by over-collateralization in RIF, meaning that the amount of RIF in reserve exceeds the number of USDRIF in circulation.

In addition, USDRIF was developed as an alternative to centrally issued stablecoins, which may not provide transparency regarding the assets held in reserve and their risk levels.

Powering this entire system, rBTC acts as the operational fuel of the network. It is programmable Bitcoin, pegged 1:1 to BTC via PoWPeg — the most secure, permissionless, and censorship-resistant bridge. rBTC can be used on a variety of DeFi platforms and dApps within the Rootstock ecosystem, enabling Bitcoin users to access DeFi without having to sell their BTC.
