The bombing of a primary school in Iran that reportedly killed at least 165 schoolgirls has been in the spotlight since the conflict between the U.S.-Israel coalition and the Iranian regime started.

The strike, which happened on Saturday, February 28, a regular school day in Iran, was condemned by the United Nations as a “grave violation of the protection afforded to schools under international humanitarian law.”

Robert Wright, an American journalist and author, has hinted at the involvement of artificial intelligence (AI) in the strikes and possibly in these killings.

In his latest newsletter, Wright remembers that the Washington Post acknowledged that during the planning phase of the first strikes, “Maven, powered by Claude, suggested hundreds of targets, issued precise location coordinates, and prioritized those targets according to importance.”

Maven, first launched in 2017, is a strategic defense system that integrates AI to identify, recognize, and recommend targets deemed dangerous in satellite imagery.

Wright states that, given Maven’s involvement in this campaign, and that the Iranian school was attacked during the first day of war, “it seems fairly likely that Claude played a role in the selection of that target and thus in the death of more than 100 young girls, many times more kids than were killed in the worst American school shooting.”

While reports state that Maven still needs a human revision to greenlight an attack on a list of targets, Wright highlights that “Claude would still be an accomplice to mass murder.”

Wright’s assumptions are consistent with what a source linked to the ongoing investigation revealed to CBS, as preliminary findings indicate that the U.S. is “likely” responsible for the attack, but unintentionally, due to the use of dated intelligence identifying the school as an Iranian military installation.

While U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth declared recently that investigations were ongoing, but that Iran was “the only side that targets civilians,” President Trump directly blamed the Iranian regime for the assault.
