JUST IN: The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has rejected all 26 claims related to a recent Nintendo patent concerning the mechanic of summoning characters to fight for the player.

While the decision is not yet final and can be appealed, the case reopens the debate about the extent to which companies can protect gameplay systems already present in previous titles.
The USPTO rejected all 26 claims related to the patent granted to Nintendo in September.
