Just dealt with updating my SASSA details and honestly, the process depends on which grant you're on. If you're getting the permanent grants (old age, disability, child support), forget doing it online—you have to physically go to your local SASSA office. They need you to fill out the Payment Method Change Form, bring your ID, and show proof of your new bank account (stamped statement not older than 3 months works). Takes about 21 working days for them to verify it with the bank, so if you want the change to kick in next month, you've gotta submit before the 15th.
For the cellphone update on permanent grants, same deal—visit the office or call 0800 60 10 11 and they'll guide you through it. They need your contact info current for official stuff and fraud prevention.
Now if you're on the SRD R370 grant, that's way different because it's all online. The whole thing happens through the SASSA SRD portal, which is actually pretty smooth. You enter your ID number, they send you an SMS link to verify, and you update your bank details from there. The sassa number change process for SRD is similar—go to their contact details page, enter your ID and application number, put in your new number, and they'll send you an OTP to confirm. Takes a few days to a couple weeks for verification.
Honestly, the trickiest part is making sure your bank account is registered only in your name—they won't pay into joint accounts or anything like that. And watch out for fake SASSA websites trying to collect your info. Always use the official portal. If you hit problems with the online stuff, just call the helpline or visit in person—it's slower but way more reliable for complicated changes.
