Stock Trading FAQ | Gate

Below are some frequently asked questions for Gate Stock users. If there is any discrepancy between this FAQ and what is displayed on your account page or in any official announcement, please refer to the page and announcements for the most accurate information.

1. Products & Eligibility

What is Gate Stock?

Gate Stock is a service under TradFi from Gate that provides stock and ETF trading capabilities. You can use USDT to buy, hold, and sell stocks and ETFs on the platform without needing to open a separate traditional brokerage account.

What assets can I trade?

Please refer to the Gate Stock listing page for the available assets, which include stocks and ETFs from major exchanges such as NASDAQ, NYSE, HKEX, and KRX.

Who can use Gate Stock?

You must meet Gate’s KYC (identity verification) and regional eligibility requirements for TradFi services.

Am I actually buying stocks?

You manage your trades and holdings in your Gate Stock Account, enjoying the related economic rights (such as cash dividends, stock splits, etc., as handled per platform rules).
However, you are not registered as a shareholder in the U.S. stock registration system under your personal name.

Can I short sell or buy on margin?

No, these features are not supported. Only buy and sell (close position) are available; short selling and margin buying are not supported.

2. Funds & Accounts

What currency is used for trading?

Trading and settlement are conducted in USDT. You need to transfer USDT to your Stock Account before making a purchase.

Where do I transfer funds from to my Stock Account?

You can transfer USDT from your Spot Account or Unified Account to your Stock Account, and transfer back from the Stock Account as needed.

Are the Stock Account and CFD Account the same funds?

No. Stocks use a separate Stock Account, which is isolated from your TradFi CFD Account funds. Transfers must be made separately.

Can I view market data without transferring USDT?

You can browse market data; however, you cannot place valid buy orders until you transfer USDT into your Stock Account.

What happens if my balance is insufficient?

If you try to place a buy order with insufficient available balance, the order will not be submitted and the page will display an insufficient funds warning.

3. Trading & Orders

How do I access Gate Stock?

Common entry points: TradFi → Stock, market selector, homepage market data, or searching for a specific asset.

What order types are supported?

Currently, only market orders are supported.
Stop-loss and take-profit orders are not available; the trading page does not display the order book.

Can I modify or cancel orders?

Market orders currently do not support modification, cancellation, or bulk cancellation. Generally, only pending market orders waiting to be filled are shown in active orders.

How do I sell my existing positions?

In Positions, select Close Position or Close All at Market, or choose Sell on the trading page (all options follow the sell logic).

Why can’t I click the Buy/Sell button?

The most common reason is the market is closed. Some Gate Stock assets only allow new orders during regular trading hours; when the market is closed, the buttons are disabled, but you can usually still view market data and positions.

Why is my order still pending?

  • Market Orders: May remain partially filled or pending due to incomplete fills during market hours. Please refer to the order details for the latest status.

Why is my execution price different from the “latest price” on the page?

The latest price is for market data and P&L reference; actual trades are executed at the best available price on the platform. In volatile markets, the execution price may differ from the latest price shown before or after you place an order. Please refer to your trade records for confirmation.

Can I place orders during pre-market or after-hours?

No, you cannot place new orders during pre-market or after-hours, nor can you place orders to be automatically activated when the market opens. In some settings, you can choose to display pre-market/after-hours prices for P&L reference, but this does not mean you can trade during those periods.

4. Trading Hours

When can I trade?

Some stocks only allow new buy, sell, close, and market orders during regular trading hours. Please refer to the displayed times on the page for specific market open and close times. Trading during low-liquidity periods may result in significant slippage, so please exercise caution.

What can I do when the market is closed?

You can view market data, positions, orders, and trade history; new orders cannot be placed. The market page will typically display “Market Closed”.

5. P&L and Pricing

How are position and daily P&L calculated?

  • Position P&L ≈ ( Latest PricePosition Cost Price ) × Number of Shares Held
  • Daily P&L is the floating P&L for current positions for the day

There are two types of cost price for positions. What’s the difference?

In Settings → Trading Settings, you can choose between:

Option
Difference (Brief)
Average Cost Price
Weighted average on buys; cost per share remains unchanged after selling
Diluted Cost Price
Similar to weighted average on buys; cost per share recalculated based on net investment after selling

Depending on your selection, your position P&L figures may vary. Please refer to your current settings.

What “latest price” options are available?

In Settings → Trading Settings, you can choose between:

Option
Description
Intraday Latest Price
P&L calculated using the latest price during regular trading hours
Pre-market/After-hours Latest Price
When available, reflects pre-market/after-hours prices; does not mean you can trade during these periods

Why is my P&L different from other apps?

Common reasons include differences in cost price calculation (average/diluted), latest price source (intraday/pre-market/after-hours), whether fees are included, and display currency. Please refer to the numbers and settings in your Gate Stock Account.

What is Net Value?

Net Value = Market value of holdings + available balance in your Stock Account (subject to market fluctuations).

6. Corporate Actions

What are corporate actions?

Corporate actions are arrangements by listed companies regarding shareholder rights due to dividends, stock splits, reverse splits, mergers, etc. Gate Stock focuses on handling economic rights related to your holdings.

Do I need to take action for corporate events?

In most cases, no action is needed. The platform will automatically process them according to announcements and rules, with results reflected in your positions and transaction history.

How are cash dividends credited?

In most cases, economic benefits such as cash dividends are credited to your Stock Account transaction history in USDT (for example, as “dividend payout”; refer to the page wording for details). The credited amount and timing are based on your transaction history and announcements.

Are dividends paid in USD or USDT?

In your Gate Stock Account, dividends are generally credited as USDT in your transaction history.

After a stock split or reverse split, why does my cost price change?

The number of shares and price per share are adjusted proportionally according to the corporate action; the cost price is updated based on platform rules and your selected average/diluted calculation method.

Where can I find corporate action rules?

For specific events, always refer to Gate’s official announcements for the asset and your account’s actual results.

7. Fees

Are there trading fees?

Yes, fees are charged. They are calculated based on the transaction amount and the platform’s current fee rules. Please refer to your trade records and transaction history for details.

How are VIP fee rates calculated?

VIP tiers are shown on the “My Fee Rates” page.

Where are fees deducted from?

Fees are generally deducted from your Stock Account’s available balance at the time of the transaction, or reflected in the settlement per platform rules. Please refer to your transaction history.

What’s the difference between Gate Stock and “Stock Tokens”?

  • Stock tokens are tokenized assets issued by RWA (Real World Asset) tokenization companies, typically offering a limited selection (a few hundred), with liquidity constrained by the actual token issuance.
  • Gate US Stocks involve trading real US stock assets, collaborating with licensed US brokers like Alpaca under the omnibus model. Trading is conducted on major US stock and ETF exchanges, supporting over 10,000+ stocks and ETFs (with ongoing expansion), far exceeding the asset range supported by RWA tokens.
  • During regular trading hours (except for large orders), users are provided with deep liquidity and National Best Bid and Offer (NBBO) directly from major US exchanges, greatly reducing the liquidity and slippage issues common with stock tokens.

What should I do if I have questions about a trade or dividend?

Please prepare the time, asset, and related order or transaction details, check for any relevant announcements, and contact customer support through the available channels. For individual amounts and status, refer to your trade records and transaction history.

Can product rules change?

Adjustments may occur (including fee rates, supported assets, corporate action handling, etc.). Always refer to the latest Gate announcements and page displays for the most up-to-date information.
