Algorithmic Trading Surges in South Korea's KOSPI Market, Program Trading Hits Record 104 Trillion Won Net Selling in H1 2026

According to Korea Exchange, algorithmic and program trading on South Korea's KOSPI market reached unprecedented levels in H1 2026, with program trading net selling hitting 104.07 trillion won, approximately 15.5 times the five-year average of 6.72 trillion won. Program trading's share of total KOSPI transaction volume jumped from an average of 25% to 33% during the period. The surge was largely driven by foreign investors, who account for approximately 90% of non-arbitrage program trading activity, executing high-frequency trading (HFT) strategies to capitalize on heightened market volatility. Korea Exchange also recorded 40 circuit breaker triggers in H1 2026—the highest on record since the system's introduction in 1996—as increased algorithmic trading contributed to intraday price swings.
