In mid-to-late June, a wave of departures hit Google's AI division, with all eight original authors of the 2017 Transformer paper "Attention Is All You Need" now confirmed to have left the company. Noam Shazeer, co-lead of Gemini and core Transformer author, announced he is joining OpenAI, marking the final departure from the iconic research team. Separately, John Jumper, 2024 Nobel Chemistry Prize winner and head of Google DeepMind's AlphaFold project, along with core team members Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel, are joining Anthropic. Over the past eight years, more than 20 landmark paper authors have departed Google Brain and DeepMind, with many joining competitors including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta.
