Amazon Leo announced today (July 15, 2026) a strategic distribution partnership with Herotel and its parent company Maziv to launch a consumer satellite internet service called evry in South Africa, targeting commercial rollout by 2027. The collaboration aims to connect millions of South Africans in rural areas, farms, and underserved communities where terrestrial infrastructure remains financially unviable.
Herotel, South Africa's largest fixed internet service provider, will serve as the authorized distributor, leveraging its existing infrastructure of over 350,000 active customers, presence across more than 550 towns, and 120 local offices nationwide. Amazon Leo's low Earth orbit satellites operate at approximately 590 kilometers altitude, significantly reducing latency compared to traditional geostationary systems. The partnership enables local installation and customer support capabilities from day one, addressing a market gap left by competitors facing regulatory delays.
