According to Odaily, a two-year book copyright collective lawsuit against Anthropic was recently settled for $1.5 billion, marking a record in U.S. copyright settlement amounts. A federal judge found that while Anthropic's use of books to train its Claude model constituted fair use, the company's download and storage of over 7 million pirated books still constituted copyright infringement. More than 91% of affected authors and publishers have applied for compensation, while some rights holders opted out of the settlement to pursue further legal action against Anthropic. The case is the first AI training copyright litigation in the U.S. to complete the full adjudication, ruling, and settlement process.
