Emart Expands to 157 Stores as Homeplus Ends Operations in South Korea

According to NICE Credit Evaluation, Emart's dominance in South Korea's hypermarket sector strengthened on July 6 as rival Homeplus concluded its corporate restructuring proceedings with plans to operate only 67 stores. As of March 31, Emart operates 157 stores, significantly ahead of Lotte Mart's 112 stores and former competitor Homeplus's 107 stores. In the capital region, Emart commands 90 stores compared to Lotte Mart's 55 stores, with wider geographic coverage across 14 provinces. NICE Credit Evaluation noted Emart's scale advantages position it to benefit substantially from Homeplus's market exit, though the broader hypermarket sector faces headwinds—the retail business sentiment index stood at 64 and 66 for the first and second quarters of 2026, well below the benchmark of 100.
