European Commission Orders Meta to Disable Auto-Play and Infinite Scroll or Face Fines

According to the European Commission, on Thursday, July 10, a preliminary investigation found that Meta's auto-play, infinite scroll, and highly personalized content recommendations on Facebook and Instagram were designed to be addictive. The EC stated that Meta failed to adequately assess risks to user wellbeing, including minors and vulnerable adults. The Commission recommended that Meta consider disabling these features by default, implementing screen time breaks, and adapting its recommendation system to be less engagement-focused. Meta has disputed the findings, with spokesperson Ben Walters telling Reuters that the company has already introduced Teen Accounts and parental controls to protect younger users. The EC will give Meta an opportunity to respond over the coming months before potential enforcement action.
