Filipino Artist Sues Memes.ai Over Unauthorized Comic Template Sale

Filipino cartoonist Elmer Saflor filed a lawsuit on July 1 against Memes Apps, the company behind AI ad generator Memes.ai, claiming it sold access to his comic "Running Away Balloon" as an advertising template without permission. Saflor registered the two-panel strip in 2024 and originally published it on Facebook in April 2017. The complaint alleges the artwork appeared in the platform's template library under its own name, searchable by any paying subscriber. Unlike prior AI litigation against Stability AI and Midjourney, Saflor's case does not challenge how the model was trained, instead focusing on direct reproduction and unauthorized public display.
