According to reports, Johnson & Johnson received FDA clearance for its Ottava robotic surgery system on Wednesday, July 22, officially entering the robotic surgery market and competing against Intuitive Surgical's da Vinci system and Medtronic's Hugo system. The Ottava system is approved for multiple upper abdominal general surgery procedures, including gastric bypass, gastrectomy, cholecystectomy, sleeve gastrectomy, appendectomy, and hiatal hernia repair. A key differentiator is that Ottava integrates its robotic arm directly into the surgical table, reducing space requirements by 30% to 50% compared to traditional systems, allowing more operating rooms to adopt robotic surgery technology.
