Microsoft Buys 7 GE Vernova Gas Turbines for Texas Data Center as AI Demand Boosts Prices 300% in Three Years

According to CNBC, Microsoft has purchased seven GE Vernova gas turbines to power a 2.7-gigawatt data center in Texas, part of a broader surge in demand driven by artificial intelligence infrastructure needs. The turbines, each standing 31 feet tall and weighing 280 tons, can power roughly 500,000 homes individually. GE Vernova's order book is now fully booked through 2029, with additional orders extending into 2030 and 2031. A single turbine costs more than $250 million, and prices have surged 300% over the past three years, according to analysts at Melius. The company estimates that approximately 20% of its gas power order book is now dedicated to data center and AI applications.
