OpenAI Launches GPT-5.6 Series with Sol Flagship Achieving 91.9% on Terminal-Bench 2.1

On June 26, OpenAI released the GPT-5.6 series models, featuring three tiers: Sol (flagship), Terra (balanced), and Luna (economic). Sol achieved a score of 91.9% on Terminal-Bench 2.1 testing, outperforming Anthropic's Claude Mythos 5 (88.0%) and Google Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview (70.7%). The Sol model introduces Max Reasoning mode for deep problem-solving and Ultra mode with sub-agent architecture for parallel task handling. Terra and Luna offer reduced pricing compared to their predecessors, with Terra at $2.50/$15.00 per million tokens (down 50% from GPT-5.5) and Luna at $1.00/$6.00 for high-frequency, low-latency scenarios. OpenAI also announced prompt caching updates offering 90% discount on cached token reads.
