Russia's Digital Ruble Rollout Begins September 1, 12 Major Banks Required to Participate

According to Bank of Russia Governor Elvira Nabiullina, the central bank announced at the Financial Congress in St. Petersburg that the digital ruble is ready for nationwide rollout beginning September 1, 2026. Starting that date, 12 systemically important banks must provide digital ruble services, and large retailers with annual revenue exceeding ₽120 million are required to accept CBDC payments. Individuals will be able to open digital wallets and make transfers using the digital ruble. Banks holding universal licenses and retailers generating over ₽30 million annually must join by September 2027, with remaining institutions following by September 2028.
