According to Financial News, South Korea's financial regulator is tightening oversight of single-stock leveraged exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix following rapid growth. The combined market capitalization of 16 single-stock leverage ETF products surged from 4.4 trillion won on May 27 to 11.9 trillion won by July 15—a 2.7-fold increase in under two months.
The regulator has suspended new listings, banned advertising, raised minimum deposits from 10 million won to 30 million won in cash, and extended mandatory investor education from one to two hours. Investors report significant losses due to the products' daily rebalancing mechanism, which can lock in cumulative losses even when underlying assets recover to original prices. A mathematical example shows that if a stock falls 20% then rises 25% to return to original value, a 2x leveraged product would fall 40%, rise 50%, and still end down 10%.
