South Korean Securities Firms Face Up to 50% Fine on 4B Won Homplus ABSTB Sales; Disciplinary Hearing Expected Late August

According to Money Today, South Korea's Financial Supervisory Service plans to hold a disciplinary hearing on incomplete sales of Homplus electronic short-term bonds (ABSTB) as early as late August, following a four-week recess through August 20. Individual investors purchased approximately 1.77 billion to 4 billion won in the bonds, sold by securities firms including Hana Securities, Hyundai Motor Securities, and Ujin Investment Securities.

If violations of the Financial Consumer Protection Act are confirmed, penalties could theoretically reach up to 50% of the investment amount. FSC officials stated that investigations into incomplete sales practices have been substantially completed, with focus on whether securities firms complied with suitability, appropriateness, and disclosure requirements when selling to individual investors.
