Taiko Discloses June 21 Security Incident: $1.75M Stolen, All Users Protected, Unzen Upgrade Launching August 6

TAIKO-1.39%
According to Taiko's post-mortem report published on July 23, attackers stole approximately $1.75 million from the protocol's bridge and vault during a security incident on June 21, but no users suffered losses. Over $11 million in funds were protected, and all balances on Taiko were backed up 1:1 after network recovery. The attack exploited leaked signing keys and bypassed the prover whitelist, but the protocol's core contracts, zero-knowledge proofs, and cryptography remained intact. Daily bridge limits slowed fund outflows, and the security committee halted operations within hours. Taiko has repaired the vulnerability and restored to pre-attack state, relaunching on July 2. OpenZeppelin reviewed the work and found no critical, high, or medium-severity issues. The upcoming Unzen upgrade, launching August 6, mandates zero-knowledge proofs for every block, preventing any single proof system from finalizing blocks independently and strengthening network security.
