U.S. Secretary of State Rubio Says Strait of Hormuz Toll Collection 'Fundamentally Unworkable'

In late June, U.S. Secretary of State Rubio said charging vessels to transit the Strait of Hormuz is "fundamentally unworkable," according to CNN. During his visit to Gulf states, Rubio repeatedly emphasized that the international waterway should not impose transit fees on ships. "Whether you call it a fee, toll, or donation, if you have to pay money to pass through, it's a toll," he stated. Rubio also questioned the enforcement mechanism, asking what would happen if a ship refused to pay and expressing concern that such a system would be both impractical and ineffective.
