Verizon Reveals $1B Dark Fiber Deal with Google, Converts Central Offices to Mini AI Data Centers

During its Q2 2026 earnings call, Verizon disclosed a partnership with Google worth more than $1 billion to connect Google's data centers using Verizon's dark fiber routes. The telecom company is also converting its central offices into small data centers to support AI inference workloads with ultra-low latency for edge computing applications. CEO Dan Schulman stated Verizon expects to announce additional AI-related deals by year-end valued at multiple billions of dollars over the coming years, as part of its new "AI Connect" business initiative.
