Y Combinator and 179 U.S. Tech Startups Oppose Broad Ban on Chinese AI Models

According to reports, Y Combinator and Little Tech Association, representing 179 signatories, have sent a letter to the Trump administration opposing a comprehensive ban on Chinese open-weight AI models, specifically naming Kimi K3 and Qwen 3.8 Max.

The coalition warned that an outright ban would not prevent these models from spreading overseas but would instead increase costs for U.S. companies already using them in production. Suhail Doshi, founder of Particle, cautioned that such restrictions could jeopardize hundreds of startups relying on open-weight models, while benefiting closed-source competitors like Anthropic. The Trump administration has not yet issued formal restrictions.
