The Sinharaja Forest Reserve, Sri Lanka's primary tropical lowland rainforest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, covers approximately 18,900 to 21,903 acres (7,648 to 8,864 hectares). Plans have been made to expand the total protected area to over 88,960 acres (36,000 hectares) to conserve biodiversity. Other major forest areas include the 100,000-acre Nilgala savanna.
