British Columbia gab am 2. Juli eine Vereinbarung mit der Bundesregierung bekannt, um ein Tankerverbot an der Nordwestküste Kanadas aufrechtzuerhalten. Das Abkommen öffnet auch die Tür für das neue Rohölpipeline-Projekt Albertas, abhängig von einer alternativen Route.

Das Pipeline-Projekt zielt darauf ab, täglich 1 Million Barrel Rohöl aus Alberta an die Küste von British Columbia für den Export nach Übersee zu transportieren.
