ENS Co-Founder Nick Johnson Blocks Security Council Renewal with 80% Voting Power

ENS-2.97%
According to The Block, Ethereum Name Service (ENS) co-founder Nick Johnson on June 30 blocked the ENS DAO's Security Council renewal vote with approximately 80% of votes cast so far. The onchain executable vote currently stands at 82% "no" and is set to close on July 5 at 8:59 PM UTC. Johnson, who holds an estimated 3.26 million ENS tokens (about 50% of all delegated ENS tokens), previously abstained from the initial off-chain Snapshot vote, stating he supported the council's renewal but disagreed with the current membership slate. In a comment on the voting platform, Johnson noted that the Security Council must function as a backstop against constitutional violations rather than a political body. The vote sought to renew the council for another two-year term before its current authority expires on July 24, 2026. The decision has drawn criticism from ENS community members concerned about governance centralization and voting power concentration.
