EU Requires Google to Open Android AI Features and Share Search Data, Effective 2027

According to the European Commission, on July 16, the regulator issued two legally binding measures against Google under the Digital Markets Act, requiring the company to open Android AI features to competitors and share search data with third-party search engines.

Under the first measure, third-party AI assistants will gain equal access to Android device functionalities as Google's Gemini and other services. The second measure mandates Google share search data with third-party search engines to enable service improvements. Google must begin sharing search data with qualified third parties from January 2027 and make improved Android systems available to users by July 2027.
