Japan May Shift Policy Focus From Supporting Yen to Controlling Debt Yields, Deutsche Bank Says

According to Deutsche Bank, Japan's policy priorities may need to shift from supporting the yen to controlling government bond yields to support its growth objectives. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takeda unveiled a $2.3 trillion growth strategy last month, marking what the bank describes as a critical juncture for Japan's fiscal and industrial policies. Deutsche Bank strategist Malika Sahdev stated that Japan needs to "make room for increased spending while maintaining fiscal sustainability." To finance the expanded spending, the government plans to mobilize domestic savings and encourage major institutional investors to allocate more capital to domestic assets. Simultaneously, Japan must ensure nominal economic growth exceeds financing costs—a goal that likely requires measures to limit yield increases, signaling a potential shift in Japan's policy direction.
