South Korea Announces Won Internationalization Roadmap, Plans Stablecoin and Bond Tokenization Pilot in 2027

According to ETNews, South Korea released a won internationalization roadmap on July 19, targeting the transition from a regulated to a freely convertible currency. The Bank of Korea will launch an offshore won settlement network, with a trial run planned for September 2026 and official launch in January 2027. The roadmap also includes building digital asset payment infrastructure to enable the issuance of won-denominated stablecoins and a government bond tokenization pilot linked to the Bank of Korea's central bank digital currency (CBDC), scheduled to begin in 2027. Additionally, South Korea will formally join the BIS-led cross-border digital payment project Agora.
