South Korean Retail Investors Flood Covered Call ETFs With 146.1 Billion Won in Net Inflows Amid Market Downturn

According to Financial News and Samsung Asset Management, on July 21-22, retail investors in South Korea made massive net purchases of covered call ETFs amid a sharp market decline. KODEX 200 Covered Call Active, which launched on July 14, recorded individual net inflows of 146.1 billion Korean won in a single week and surpassed 200 billion Korean won in cumulative individual net purchases within one week of listing.

Covered call ETFs sell call options on underlying assets while holding them, using option premiums as distribution sources. This strategy provides stronger downside protection and stable cash flow in sideways or mild decline markets compared to traditional index ETFs. However, experts warn these products do not guarantee principal protection; if underlying asset prices fall significantly, ETF values decline accordingly, and distributions may not offset losses. In strong bull markets, covered call strategies cap upside gains, potentially underperforming standard index ETFs over extended periods.
