Philippines' Ube Exports Hit $3M in 2025, Double From 2024, But Supply Concerns Mount

According to Rappler, the Philippines' ube exports exceeded $3 million in 2025, more than double the 2024 figure, driving demand from the US, UK, and Japan. However, production of fresh ube fell 6.7% from 2024 to 2025, while cultivated area declined 17%, creating supply constraints despite surging global interest. Vietnam is positioning its Ben Ke ube variety for export and seeking geographical indication protection, potentially threatening the Philippines' market position. Experts note that without stronger government support for research, processing infrastructure, and geographical indication protection, the Philippines may fail to capitalize on the ube boom, with most price increases benefiting middlemen rather than farmers.
